Pellet stove inspection vs chimney inspection: what’s actually different

A chimney inspection examines a passive masonry structure; a pellet stove inspection tests an active appliance, fans, sensors, gaskets, and a pressurized vent. Same goal, completely different checklist, and knowing the difference keeps you from buying the wrong service.

Homeowners with a pellet stove sometimes book “a chimney inspection” because that’s the familiar phrase, and a fireplace-focused tech dutifully checks a flue the stove doesn’t even use. Wrong tool, wasted money. Here’s the clean split.

What a chimney inspection examines

A masonry (or factory-built) chimney is passive infrastructure: gravity draft, heat-tolerant liner, structure exposed to weather. So the inspection levels focus on structural integrity, creosote accumulation, water damage, and draft, the concerns of a system with no moving parts.

What a pellet stove inspection tests

A pellet stove is an appliance, closer to a furnace than to a fireplace: an auger feeds fuel, a blower pushes exhaust, sensors police the whole arrangement. The inspection is therefore functional, not just visual:

Vent pipe interior, joints, and termination, pressurized exhaust demands sealed integrity

Gaskets on door and glass, the seal the combustion design assumes

Burn pot, ash paths, and heat exchanger surfaces

Blowers and the safety-switch chain, tested live

An actual burn cycle: ignition, steady state, shutdown

Where people get burned

Two failure modes: the pellet owner who buys chimney inspections year after year, appliance aging unexamined behind a clean flue report, and the fireplace owner whose “stove guy” glances at the firebox but never runs a camera up the masonry flue. Match the inspection to the system. If a company can’t describe the difference, that’s your answer about their pellet experience.

The both-systems house

Common across DFW: a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, a pellet stove heating the den. Two systems, two checklists, one combined visit if you book it that way, and if the fireplace side is due for a sweep, same trip. One appointment in September covers the whole house’s fire infrastructure for the year, which is exactly how our maintenance plans treat multi-system homes.
