Level 1 Inspection

Level 1 chimney inspection for Dallas homes

If you use the same fireplace every winter and nothing about it has changed, a Level 1 inspection is the annual check that keeps you safe. It’s the visual, readily-accessible review the CSIA recommends once a year, and for most Dallas homeowners it’s all you need.

A Level 1 inspection is for a chimney and fireplace in continued service, under the same conditions, with no reason to suspect hidden trouble. We check the readily accessible parts, inside and out, and confirm the whole system is sound and safe to use this season.

What a Level 1 inspection covers

We examine the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and the accessible parts of the appliance and its connection, confirming the structure is sound and the flue is clear and safe.

Exterior masonry, crown, and cap from accessible vantage points

Firebox, damper, and visible flue for cracks or blockage

Creosote buildup level in the flue

Clearances and the basic condition of the appliance connection

Any signs of animals, nesting, or water intrusion

1

Chimney cap

Keeps rain, debris, and animals out of the flue and helps stop downdrafts.

2

Crown

The concrete top slab that sheds water away from the masonry below it.

3

Flue liner

The channel that safely carries smoke and gases up and out of your home.

4

Brick & mortar

The structural masonry that takes the brunt of North Texas weather.

5

Flashing & seal

The waterproof seam where the chimney meets the roofline.

6

Firebox & damper

Where the fire burns, and the damper that seals the flue when it’s closed.

When Level 1 is the right call in Dallas

Choose a Level 1 when you burn in the same fireplace each year and nothing has changed, no new stove or insert, no recent chimney fire, storm hit, or house sale. Early fall is the ideal time in North Texas: it gets your system checked before the first cold snap, when heavy use begins and appointments fill up fast.

If the visual check can’t fully assess something, we tell you honestly and recommend a Level 2, we never guess with your family’s safety.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need a chimney inspection?

The CSIA recommends a chimney inspection once a year, along with cleaning as needed. For most Dallas homeowners using the same fireplace each winter, an annual Level 1 inspection is exactly right.

What’s the difference between an inspection and a sweep?

An inspection assesses the condition and safety of the chimney; a sweep cleans creosote and debris out of the flue. You often need both, and we can do them together in one visit.

How long does a Level 1 inspection take?

Most Level 1 inspections take under an hour. You get a clear report and photos of anything worth watching, so there are no surprises.

Do I need a Level 1 or a Level 2 inspection?

If nothing has changed and you’re just doing your annual check, Level 1 is right. If you’re buying or selling a home, changed appliances, or had a fire or storm, you need a Level 2. We’ll never upsell you to a level you don’t need.
