The signs your chimney needs sweeping right now

A campfire smell on humid days, black flakes in the firebox, lazier draft than last year, oily streaks on the flue walls: your chimney announces a due sweep in plain language. Here’s the full signal list, what each one means, and the two that mean stop burning first.

You don’t need a camera to know a sweep is overdue, the flue broadcasts it. What follows is the signal list we’d give a neighbor, ordered from subtle to sirens.

The early signals

Campfire smell on humid or rainy days. Moisture activates the deposits’ odor. A clean flue doesn’t smell like last winter

Black flakes or soot falling into the firebox. That’s creosote shedding off the walls, there’s more where it came from

Visible black coating when you shine a light past the damper: matte dusting is early stage; a thick or shiny layer moves you down this list fast

The mid-stage signals

Lazier fires and weaker draft. Buildup narrows the flue; smoke lingers at startup, sometimes puffs into the room. (Draft trouble has other causes too, but buildup is the most common)

Soot marks above the fireplace opening. The system is exhaling into the room under some conditions

It’s been years and you can’t remember the last sweep. Not a symptom, but statistically the strongest predictor we see

The stop-burning signals

Two signs that mean no more fires until it’s addressed: a shiny, tar-like glaze on the flue walls, that’s stage-3 creosote, concentrated fuel that ordinary sweeping can’t remove and fires ignite, it needs deep removal. And any popping, crackling, or roaring from inside the flue during a fire, that may be a small chimney fire in progress. Shut the fire down safely, and treat the system as unburnable until inspected.

What happens when you call

A proper sweep visit confirms the stage, cleans what brushing legitimately handles, and shows you photos before and after, and if what’s in there is beyond a sweep, we tell you that before doing work that wouldn’t solve it, how we run every job. Book here, and mention which signals you spotted.
