Tier 1: prefab kits and units
Manufactured outdoor fireboxes and stacked-kit fireplaces placed on an existing patio slab. Lowest cost, fastest install (days), and honest value where the slab already exists and the design goal is ‘fire feature’, not ‘estate focal point’. Watch the wind-and-clearance specs, and note big-box kits vary wildly in how they survive Texas weather cycling.
Tier 2: modular masonry systems
Engineered block cores (often with steel fireboxes) finished in stone or stucco veneer, the sweet spot for most DFW backyards: masonry look and durability at 50-70% of full-custom cost, buildable in a week-plus. Requires proper footing (next paragraph), and quality varies with the core system specified, ask what’s under the veneer.
Tier 3: full custom masonry
Footing-up construction, block core, firebrick firebox, real flue, stone finish, sized and styled to the design. This is chimney-construction economics outdoors: real money, generational result.
