What’s actually involved in installing a new fireplace

A new fireplace install runs a predictable arc: site assessment and type selection, permits, rough-in (framing, venting, fuel), the appliance set, finish work, and a commissioning burn with inspection. Gas direct-vent projects typically span a few days of on-site work spread across permit and finish timelines; here’s the whole sequence so nothing surprises you.

Homeowners picture fireplace installation as one dramatic delivery day. In practice it’s a sequence, mostly quiet, occasionally dusty, and knowing the stages turns a mysterious project into a predictable one. Using the most common project (new direct-vent gas) as the spine:

Stage 1: assessment and design

We look at the wall you’re imagining, and the truths behind it: framing, what’s above (venting path), gas line distance and meter capacity, and clearances per the appliance’s listing. This is where type and model lock in, and where honest surprises surface early, the second-floor bedroom above your chosen wall changes the venting math, better to know now.

Stage 2: permits

Gas appliance + venting = permitted work in metroplex cities, the full permit picture. We file; the timeline runs days-to-weeks by city and season, and it overlaps with appliance lead time, so it rarely delays anything.

Stage 3: rough-in (the dusty days)

Framing: the appliance cavity built to listed clearances, non-combustible materials where specified

Venting: the direct-vent run through wall or up through the roof, sealed and terminated per spec, the stage where install quality is made or lost

Gas: line extended, sized, pressure-tested. Electrical for blowers and ignition pulled now too

Stage 4: set and finish

The appliance sets into its cavity, connects, and then finish work wraps it: surround, hearth, mantel, drywall or stone. Finish is the schedule’s accordion, tile availability and stone masons move timelines more than anything mechanical.

Stage 5: commissioning

First burn with the installer present: ignition chain, flame pattern, blower, venting draft verified, remote programmed, and the city’s inspection signed off. You get the manuals, the warranty registration, and the walkthrough, then it’s yours.

Timeline honesty: on-site work across these stages is typically 3-5 working days for direct-vent gas; calendar span, permits to final, runs a few weeks, dominated by paperwork and finish materials rather than tools. Electric installs compress to a day; no-chimney options here; masonry construction is its own longer story. One crew owning all stages, us, is the difference between a sequence and a finger-pointing contest. Start stage one.
