Pellet stove installation cost: appliance, venting, and the details

Pellet stove projects price on the appliance (mid-range as heating equipment goes), the venting run (pellet vent is its own pipe system, priced by route), the hearth pad and clearance setup, and electrical. Freestanding installs are simpler than fireplace-insert configurations. Here’s each line with its logic.

Pellet stoves occupy a sensible middle in heating-appliance economics: more machine than a space heater, less project than a fireplace build. The invoice has four lines; here’s what drives each.

Line 1: the appliance

Hopper capacity, BTU output, and control sophistication set the tier, entry units heat a room; flagship units with big hoppers, programmable thermostats, and self-cleaning cycles heat small homes. Brand matters here more than in most categories: parts availability and auger/blower quality separate the decade-runners from the disposables. We’ll steer honestly, the pros-and-cons guide covers the ownership reality.

Line 2: venting, smaller pipe, its own rules

Pellet exhaust is fan-driven and cooler than wood smoke, so it uses dedicated pellet vent (typically 3-4 inch), which can run horizontally through a wall with a short rise, the routing freedom that makes pellet installs flexible. Cost scales with route: straight-out-the-wall is the base case; vertical runs, extra elbows, or routing up an existing chimney (with a liner adapter) add per-foot and per-fitting. The venting options guide maps the choices.

Line 3: hearth and clearances

A non-combustible floor pad sized to the listing, wall clearances per the manual (modest, pellet shells run cooler than wood stoves), and any wall shielding where placement is tight. Usually a modest line; occasionally the placement-decider in carpeted rooms.

Line 4: electrical

Auger, igniter, and blowers need a nearby outlet, existing outlet: free; new circuit: an electrician line item. Worth asking about surge protection and, for outage-resilience buyers, battery-backup options, pellet’s grid dependency is its one resilience gap.

Config note: freestanding units (the majority) install as above; pellet inserts into existing masonry fireplaces price more like fireplace inserts, appliance plus chimney liner run. And every config ends the same way: a commissioning burn, controls walkthrough, and the safety checklist verified. Fixed written quote up front, as always. Get yours.
