We write a lot about problems on this blog, here’s a post about the part that prevents two of the most common ones at once, for less than either costs to fix a single time.
Mechanism one: the mesh wall (wildlife)
The cap’s sides are heavy mesh, and that mesh is the entire difference between your flue and the local wildlife’s favorite address. What each would-be tenant costs you uncapped:
Chimney swifts: federally protected while nesting, meaning weeks of waiting plus removal and cleanup after fledging, every single spring they return
Squirrels: chewing damage on dampers and chase framing, plus the fell-in-can’t-climb-out rescue scenario
Raccoons: a defended nursery on your smoke shelf and a genuine biohazard cleanup
All of them: nests = tinder in the smoke path, the fire risk nobody prices in
Mechanism two: the roof (water)
An uncapped flue takes every storm point-blank: water lands on the damper (rust), pools on the smoke shelf (odor, mortar decay), soaks the smoke chamber (accelerated creosote activity), and joins the interior water route from the inside lane. The cap’s hood simply makes the rain miss, and unlike every other water defense on the chimney, it requires zero maintenance beyond existing.
The bundled bonus round: the same part also kills wind-driven downdrafts (that cold-fireplace draft in winter storms) and screens outgoing embers during burns. Four protections, one modest component, one visit to install. If your chimney’s bare, or wearing a rusted-out galvanized relic, the fix is the easiest decision this blog will ever hand you. Take it.
