Height. Liner, insulation, and labor all scale per foot, the two-story flue costs proportionally more than the ranch, no way around physics
Diameter and alloy. Bigger flues need bigger (pricier) liner; fuel type sets alloy, standard 316 stainless covers wood and most gas, specialty alloys serve high-efficiency condensing appliances
Gauge and insulation. Wood-burning duty wants heavier wall and full insulation wrap (keeps flue gases hot → strong draft, less condensation, and it’s what listing requirements assume). This line is exactly where bargain quotes quietly economize
Connection work. A straight fireplace connection is simple; insert tie-ins, offset flues, and smoke-chamber transitions add fabrication, insert installs bundle this naturally
Access. The eternal factor, steep roofs and tall stacks add staging to everything, as always
The bargain-liner anatomy lesson
How a too-good reline quote is built: thin-gauge aluminum or light stainless flex (fine for some gas applications, wrong for wood), no insulation (“optional extra”), a generic connection, and no sizing calculation against your appliance’s table. It vents, initially, while running cool, condensing heavily, and manufacturing creosote, and thin walls plus acidic condensate is a short marriage. The reline you buy twice costs more than the one you buy once. Quote-reading defense: gauge, alloy, insulation spec, and sizing basis, all four in writing, or keep shopping.
